- Innovative Nuclear Energy System Consisting with Intensive Safety and Security and Waste Minimization
The utilization of innovative nuclear reactors and small modular reactors enable its multiple purpose utilization and enhance its flexibility responding to variable social demands. It, however, might requires enhanced measures against nuclear proliferation threats such as terrorism. We are pursuing studies on resilient nuclear energy system against threats to safety, security and non-proliferation. Small modular light water reactors loading silicide fuel, one of the candidates of accident tolerant fuel, and sodium-cooled fast reactors with passive safety shutdown device, non-destructive monitoring system have been investigated for enhancing safety and security by their design, as well as minimizing the burden of high-level waste by utilization of its principal component minor actinides. - Nuclear Non-proliferation Science & Technology
Nuclear non-proliferation science and technologies R&D are being performed to detect the diversion of nuclear material and its illegal transfer. Non-destructive assay technologies have been investigated; simple but accurate passive gamma/neutron tomography technology for the defects of nuclear fuel, passive neutron coincident counting methods or gamma spectroscopy of high-energy low-volatile fission products for quantifying the nuclear material of advanced fuel or fuel debris, and nuclear material detection methods by photo-fission reactions with high energy photon beam injection to interrogate heavily shielded nuclear material. These technologies contribute to early detect the illegal transferred nuclear fuels, and flexible nuclear energy utilization by security enhancement.
